وأجريت الانتخابات في مناخ هادئ وشارك فيها ملايين الناخبين لاختيار الرئيس الخامس للسنغال بعد 3 سنوات من الاضطرابات السياسية غير المسبوقة التي أثارت احتجاجات عنيفة مناهضة للحكومة وعززت الدعم للمعارضة.

وقد تمثل الانتخابات نهاية محتملة لنظام أتى بسياسات مؤيدة للاستثمار في بلد سيصبح أحدث منتج للنفط والغاز في القارة الأفريقية لكنه أخفق في الحد من الصعوبات الاقتصادية وأثار الاضطرابات في واحدة من أكثر الديمقراطيات استقرارا بمنطقة غرب أفريقيا التي شهدت العديد من الانقلابات.
